Case Study: STV

The Client:

STV is Scotland’s leading digital media brand, providing consumers with quality content on air, online and on demand. It is the Scottish equivalent to ITV showing programmes such as Britain's Got Talent, Emmerdale and Coronation Street.

Target Market/Industry:

Charity fundraising - Highlighting the launch of a new charity lottery.

The Brief:

STV launched the Scottish Children’s Lottery in October 2016; to help raise funds for and improve the lives of young people across Scotland. Unlike a national lottery, the Scottish Children’s Lottery is the brand name for the draw whose revenues support four charities equally on a weekly rotational basis.

STV were looking for a promotional product which would highlight the lottery brand around Glasgow. They required a visually striking item that could be used again. STV had four specific brief requirements:

  • Create an innovative promotional product.
  • The item had to communicate the brand to a wide audience through a range of broadcasting channels.
  • A short lead time of only 4 weeks from concept to delivery.
  • Remain on brand, on time and on budget.

The Challenge:

After discussing a range of ideas with STV, they decided they would promote the brand by launching five replica lottery balls on to the River Clyde in Glasgow and floating them down the river. A fantastic idea with many challenges!

The Solution:

From initial concept to delivery, we manufactured and supplied a product that was on brand, on budget and on time. The final product was a great representation of the official lottery balls and created a huge amount of interest.

We created five, four metre wide replica lottery balls which mirrored the actual balls used in the draw they were also made in the UK.

We arranged transport of the balls to Glasgow, inflated them and on the river by 7:30am to catch rush hour traffic.

Our team were on hand as marshalls for 12 hours towing the ball up and down the river on a contractors boat.

The event was a great success with the local press turning up to the launch.

The Results:

Our team arrived on site at 6:30am and worked with the STV events team and the marine contractor for the entire day. The balls generated a huge amount of interest with lots of sharing on social media. With press coverage and the STV events team on hand to answer any questions the launch was a massive success!

The balls have since been used around Scotland to promote the lottery at iconic locations. Emma Sinclair from the event’s team at STV was delighted with how things went. “Fluid Branding provided a professional solution to our requirements and managed the project perfectly on the day.”
